Oickle wins Queens/Shelburne riding nomination

Writer and Liberal Party worker Vernon Oickle won the Liberal Party nomination for the Queens/Shelburne riding over farmer and economic development worker Joan Bower by a two-to-one margin in Port Mouton Saturday.

The race had been a three-way contest until three days ago, when teacher Seth Renaud withdrew his bid for the nomination.

There were more than 200 people in the community hall to hear pitches by Oickle (Queens)  and Bower (Shelburne) and a Liberal "pep talk" by Digby/Clare MLA Gordon Wilson.

In his speech, Oickle said that uniting the riding was a primary concern, as was protecting natural spaces.

The Queens/Shelburne riding was created in a electoral map redraw by the NDP government several years ago, with the new riding having four times times as many voters in Queens County than those in Shelburne County.

A date for the next election has not yet been called, but must be by 2018 at the latest. It has been 25 years since a Liberal from Queens was elected as a MLA.
