Shell Oil spills 350,000 litres of oil in gulf

Shell Oil, the international conglomerate which Nova Scotia premier Stephen McNeil has touted as having a "strong safety and environmental and health and safety record" has admitted to an oil spill from its drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico, amounting to 350,000 or more litres of oil. 

Budget with razor-thin surplus adds more cash for aquaculture, ferry, SchoolsPlus

The McNeil government released its 2016-2017 budget Tuesday afternoon, decribing it as "balanced" and "making investments in economic growth, education, and youth."

The budget projects a $127.4 million surplus, including a one-time revenue increase of $110.3 million because of federal and municipal contributions for the convention centre in Halifax.

The government says the $110.3 million will go towards the debt to provide the fiscal capacity to launch a multi-year development of the QEII Health Sciences Centre. The budget's net position is $17.1 million.

My reaction to the recent announcement by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Keith Colwell, that lobster buyers and their designates will be required to take a mandatory lobster handling course if they wish to have their licences renewed is that this is an insult to the entire lobster industry.
