SHAUNTAY GRANT IN PERFORMANCE
Tues Feb 7
7:00pm

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
Yarmouth

Shauntay Grant, performance artist, will appear in Yarmouth at the Art
Gallery of Nova Scotia , Western Branch, on Tuesday, February 7th, at
7:00 p.m. The public performance of her work is an African Heritage
Month event, sponsored by the Tri-County Women’s Centre and the Black
Employment Partnership Committee.

Shauntay Grant is a writer, spoken word performer, broadcast journalist
and musician. She has been described by the Chronicle Herald as ‘a
tireless advocate for poets and for all literary and performing arts’ .
‘Know that your life is an important story’ is a quote from Shauntay
Grant that so impressed Sandra Hubbard-LeBlanc when she heard it in
performance that she has it framed and hanging on her office wall at the
Tri-County Women’s Centre.  ‘It’s a reminder to me every day’, says
Hubbard-LeBlanc, ‘of the value and importance of what we’re trying to do
here.. Shauntay’s words are a touchstone for me.’.
Shauntay Grant is a still young woman whose own life speaks of the power
of words and music, and of the strength of one voice to make a
difference.  Her life is a series of accolades and triumphs, her voice a
voice for change.
She is known to many as the on-air host of CBC Radio’s regional music
program ‘All the Best’. Halifax-based, she coordinates the
arts-for-social-change project ‘Poets4Change’, and she organizes ‘Word
rhythm’, a performance showcase that encourages collaboration between
poets and musicians.
Grant was Poet of Honour at the 2010 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word
and was Halifax’s 3rd Poet-Laureate in 2009-2010.
Her two children’s books Up Home (winner of the Best Atlantic Published
Book Award, 2009) and The City Speaks in Drums  blend her worlds of
poetry and music. She forcefully and rhythmically tells her own story
and the stories of North Preston and Halifax. Her stage play Steal Away
Home won the 2011 Jury Award for Outstanding Drama at the Atlantic
Fringe Festival.
Grant is the recipient of a 2011 INSPIRE award from Big Brothers Big
Sisters and she serves on the board of Youth Voices of Nova Scotia.
Grant regularly conducts arts workshops for youth and adults at
festivals, schools, and community centres.  While she is in Yarmouth,
she will be leading a workshop for young women.
Shauntay Grant’s February 7th performance at the AGNS Western Branch is
free. Tri-County Women’s Centre’s Sandra Hubbard LeBlanc, having heard
Shauntay Grant live, urges anyone who can to come for an unforgettable
evening, not to be missed.
Donations are welcome and will help support youth programs at the
Tri-County Women’s Centre. A small reception will follow the spoken word
performance, hosted by the Black Employment Partnership committee.
The AGNS Western Branch is located at 341 Main Street, Yarmouth.
