Members of the Chronicle Herald’s editorial staff have walked off the job after last minute talks failed to avert a work disruption.
At just past midnight, the union published pictures of members walking the picket line outside of the newspaper’s building on Joseph Howe Drive in Halifax. The HTU said about two dozen members were on the line shortly after strike action began.
At 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, the newspaper was in a legal lockout position, while the 61 members of the Halifax Typographical Union (HTU) became legally entitled to strike. The workers include reporters, editors, photographers, columnists and support staff.
HTU president Ingrid Bulmer said the editorial staff opted to walk off the job after being told on Friday evening that they would not be locked out, but that the company would impose its contract demands on them.
