23-year-old Richard Clark won a three-way nomination fight to represent the South Shore-St. Margaret's riding in the October 19 federal election.

Already a ten-year veteran of political campaigning in the area, Clark names current MP Gerald Keddy as his "political mentor."

Clark eased ahead of political veteran and former Queens County PC MLA Kerry Morash and Chester businessman Rick Perkins in three nomination meetings, where more than 600 ballots were cast.

Riding Association president Donna Malone told SCT that she does not know how many votes each candidate won or whether the vote was settled in the first, second or third ballot.

Clark has served as the PC Party of Canada's national outreach co-ordinator and has worked for the party in Ontario.

The young candidate told SCT he was "very pleased" about the nomination and was taking some time "taking it easy."

Asked what he thought of the nomination process, Clark said, "It shows what politics is about - the grass roots."

"I just tried to give poeple a reason to go out and vote," he added.

Gerald Keddy has held the seat since 1997 and announced earlier he would not re-offer.

Clark will face Liberal candidate Bernadette Jordan and NDP candidate Alex Godbold.

Nikita (Nik) Lopoukhine retired in 2005 from Parks Canada as director general national parks. He is the former member of the Council of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and chair of World Commission on Protected Areas. He is also the recipient of the 2012 Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Harkin Award, the 2013 Canadian Council on Ecological Areas Gold Leaf Award and in 2014 a medal from the U.S.-based Brandwein Institute.
