Grassroots and the boogeyman

Among the flurry of desperate pitches I get each day from Tom, Justin, Mary, Dick and Bob wanting me to send $3, $5, $20, $100 to defeat Tom, Justin and Steve was this gem today from the NDP marked "URGENT: before midnight"

Fair enough.

In the email pitch, they said: "We recently learned that Stephen Harper’s friends set-up U.S.-style political action committees in Canada. Made up of Conservative insiders from the highest ranks, these groups can spend millions to attack Tom Mulcair and this grassroots campaign we’re building. We can’t let that happen," saying there were "only 10 hours left to prove we're ready to defeat this guy: (who, by the way looks VERY scary).

and elect this nice, friendly guy

Looks pretty much like Yankee-style boogeyman stuff.

Cynical Harper govt message for Heritage Day

SCT READERS... Below find the most cynical piece of Harper government PR bumpf I have ever received - in 8 years and hundreds of releases. Riding on the back of Nova Scotia Heritage Day, the federal govt PR machine sent a piece of drivel to SCT (and thousands of other journalists) which has NOT ONE THING relating to heritage, but is a pre-election screed reminding citizens about: effective budget, economic plan, child care deductions, family tax cut and "staying the course.

The news release also took the opportunity to crap on the NDP and Liberal Party.

Here is a piece written by Minister of State (Finance) Kevin Sorenson to mark Heritage Day in Nova Scotia on Monday, February 16.

As many families spend time together celebrating Heritage Day, our Government is working overtime to develop a prudent and effective budget that will help Nova Scotia remain a stable and secure place for families to grow and prosper.

A key part of our economic plan is to keep more of your hard earned dollars in your pocket so you can spend it on the priorities that matter most to your family. For example, we have increased the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) to $160 per month from $100 per month for children under the age of 6. The UCCB now also offers $60 per month for children aged 6 through 17, effective as of January 1, 2015.

We have also increased the Child Care Expense Deduction limit by $1000, effective as of the 2015 taxation year. And we have introduced the Family Tax Cut, a new federal non-refundable tax credit, which would provide up to $2,000 in tax relief to couples with children under the age of 18, effective as of the 2014 taxation year. I am pleased to report that every Canadian family with children will benefit from our plan.

Our Government remains on track to balance the budget this year, and we are fulfilling our promise to help Canadian families balance theirs. In contrast, the Liberals and NDP would like us to throw caution to the wind, reverse these tax cuts and drive the country further into debt. I can tell you – we will not let that happen. The opposition believes that politicians in Ottawa can spend your money better than you can. We know they are wrong.

In an uncertain world, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Finance Minister Joe Oliver are providing the strong leadership Canada needs and deserves. We have a plan and our plan is working. More than 1.2 million new jobs have been created since 2009. We must stay the course. Our plan of lowering taxes and providing benefits directly to families for them to reinvest in the economy will ensure a more prosperous Canada today and for generations to come.
