Happy Bookers Book Club: The Clockmaker’s Daughter

Tuesday, April 9, 1:30 p.m.

On the second Tuesday of the month enjoy lively book discussions with friends! Today the group will discuss The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton. The club will share a new book every month. Coffee and tea are served. New members are always welcome.

 

National Canadian Film Day: The Breadwinner

Wednesday, April 17, 6 p.m.

Parvana (Saara Chaudry) is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to be able to get a job and help to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom and danger. With courage and imagination, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents, as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. Run time is 94 minutes. This film is rated PG.

Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m.

Adults can gather around the table, sewing, quilting and more.

 

Tot ‘n’ Tumble

Fridays, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

A time for toddlers (aged zero to 6) and their caregiver to interact with story time, crafts and a snack. This program is in partnership with Kings Street Family Resource Centre.

 

Pudding Painting

Saturday, April 6, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Toddlers, up to 5 years of age, can paint a picture using pudding.

 

Balloon Rockets

Saturday, April 27, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Tape a straw on a string to a balloon, blow up the balloon, and let it fly across the string when you let go. This program is for children aged 6 to 12 years.

Fun stories, games, and snacks for children from birth to preschool. This program is presented in partnership with the King Street Family Resource Centre.

 

Chair Yoga with Tamara McIntyre

Thursday, April 4 and 11, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Yoga instructor Tamara McIntyre will lead a four-week session of chair yoga, one of the most beneficial kinds of yoga for seniors and beginners. This program is for adults 55 and older. Participants were asked to register ahead by contacting the library.

 

DIY Craft Thursdays

Thursdays, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Are you a crafty kid? If so, we have all the supplies you need to make a weekly craft with our easy-to-follow instructions. Or, you can put your own spin on our design. This program is for children aged 4 to 14 years.

 

Lockeport Library Book Club: Run, Hide, Repeat

Monday, April 8, 7 p.m.

All are welcome to join us in discussing the book Run, Hide, Repeat: A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood by Pauline Dakin. The library will only be open for this program.

 

National Canadian Film Day: The Grand Seduction

Wednesday, April 17, 7 p.m.

Celebrate National Canadian Film Day with a viewing of the hilarious Canadian comedy The Grand Seduction. Filmed in Newfoundland, it tells the story of what lengths one tiny fishing village goes through to secure a new doctor to keep their community alive. The film is rated PG and runs 1 hour 53 minutes.

Free Income Tax Program for Persons with Low Income

Wednesdays and Fridays, 1 to 4 p.m.

This is a free service for all low-income seniors and residents of Shelburne County. The low-income threshold is $35,000 for a single person, $45,000 for a couple, $47,500 for three people, and $2,500 for each additional person. Please bring your income tax forms with you. Also bring all of your information slips, medical receipts (you can get a printout from your pharmacy), and any charitable donations slips. This program is in partnership with Our Senior Services, Shelburne County Senior Safety & Services Society.

 

Radon Information Session

Thursday, April 4, 7 p.m.

Representatives from Nova Scotia Lung Association will provide information on radon. What is it? Where does it come from? How does one test for it? What are the health risks?

 

Brown Baggers Books and Banter Group

Tuesday, April 9, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Participate in the Brown Baggers Books and Banter Group and enjoy discussing books throughout the year while socializing at the library. The book up for discussion this month isThere There by Tommy Orange. The club meets the second Tuesday of each month, and new members are welcome.

 

Read to Me

Thursdays, April 11 through May 30, 10 a.m.

This program offers books, rhymes, crafts and bubbles for children aged 5 and under and their caregivers. On April 18 and May 16, the program takes place at Roseway Manor to share our fun with residents there. Roseway Manor is located at 1604 Lake Rd, Shelburne.

 

The Egg Studio

Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Artist Mary Ayer will be doing demonstrations of designing and making Pysanky Ukrainian Easter eggs. Learn the creative process from beginning to end. There will be kits and supplies on site.

 

National Canadian Film Day: You Are Here: A Come From Away Story

Wednesday, April 17, 6:15 p.m.

What would you do if 6,600 people unexpectedly landed in your small town with no place to stay? For the 11,000 people of Gander, Newfoundland, this incredible event happened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, when nearly 40 planes are rerouted and grounded there. This documentary shows how this town in Newfoundland came together to feed, shelter and support all of the stranded airline passengers for 6 days. This film is rated PG and run time is 84 minutes.

 

Digital Literacy for Seniors Training

Thursday, April 18, 1 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Digital literacy trainer James Ogden will be doing one-on-one sessions throughout the day on mobile technology such as laptops, iPads, Android tablets and smartphones. Register by signing up at the branch or contacting the branch to book an appointment.

 

Boys Night Out: Word Up!

Thursday, April 18, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Join us for some fun word games and word-related activities. This is a great “brain buster.” Boys Night Out is a program “just for the guys” aged 9 to 12. Preregistration is preferred.

 

LEGO Club

Saturday, April 20, 10:30 a.m.

All ages can join the fun and take part in creating and building with LEGO. Bring a friend.

 

Girl Thing: Harry Potter Night

Thursday, April 25, 6:30 p.m.

Take a potion class, make fluffy snot, and visit Diagon Alley. This program is for girls in Grade 4 to 6. Participants are asked to register by April 18 by contacting the library.
