Creative Minds series Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m. features a special presentation about Nelson Surette, whose work is on exhibit in the main gallery.
Roy Mandell was a close friend of the Acadian artist, and will be giving the presentation. Mandell says that the focus is about an “… exchange between two artists from two different worlds meeting at the right time, [and is] more personal than academic—with painting as a common denominator.”
Mandell’s presentation promises to be educational, full of insights, and fun.
All are welcome. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the AGNS Western Branch Society, and is free to the public. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
New exhibit Community Room, AGNS Western Branch, ready to launch
Breaking Patterns by the Artist’s Way Collective (AWC) officially opens with a reception Friday, November 7, at 6 pm at the AGNS Western Branch, and will be on exhibit until January 4.
The AWC had its beginnings in 2012 when a group of individuals with varied experience in Annapolis County began meeting to discuss The Artist’s Way, a book about creativity written by Julia Cameron. After the 13-week program ended, they kept in contact and began planning joint exhibitions.
The challenge they gave themselves for this new exhibit in Yarmouth was to stretch their artistic skills by going beyond their usual individual approaches. In so doing, they focused on the saying, “When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge,” words that originated with Tuli Kupferberg, American counterculture poet, author, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist, publisher and co-founder of the band The Fugs.
With this quote in mind, the group created the pieces that will be on exhibit. One of the pieces is a collaborative effort—a large mosaic-style installation made up of multiple canvasses painted by each artist. While the size and number of canvasses was set by the group, each artist was free to use whatever colours and styles she chose.
In addition to the collective installation, each artist will exhibit an individual array of work ranging from oils, pen and ink, pastels, watercolours, fibre, acrylics and collage.
The five artists will be present at the opening reception. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the AGNS Western Branch Society.
